I am Ralio Mohamud, 18 years of age, born on April 25, 1997. I and my family have been living in Louisville, Kentucky for 7 Years. Before that, we lived in Manchester, New Hampshire for 3 years since we came to the U.S. in 2006. Traveling is one of my hobbies. I’ve been to Rhode Island to visit my grandma’s sister and her kids. I’ve been to Arizona because my dad lives there with his new wife. I’ve also been to Ohio, Cincinnati for 2 summer breaks in a row to visit my cousins because I only learned about them the first summer. All those places that I’ve been to, I didn’t see a lot of people outside, except a little more in Arizona. I have 4 brothers and 4 sisters, so I’ve never been lonely.
Leaving my home in Kenya, to the United States, starting a new life that I wasn’t so familiar with at all. The non-colored people, how they dressed and how they talked, how their houses were big, well just about everything was amazing to me since I’m a Muslim, so it was amazing to see someone speak a different language from me, I dress different and I have never seen people that weren’t covered with scarf’s like people in my culture do. Since I’ve been in the U.S for almost 10 years, none of that seems to amaze men at all because I’m used to it now. I and the rest of my brothers and sisters all go to school, something my parents never did here or in Kenya.
In Kenya, I really don’t know if there are schools there where they teach medical things or if there even is a school there, because I have never been to one. Now I’m in high school and I decided that I was going to be a pediatrician in America and work with people of my age and younger, then go to Kenya and help out over there. Plus I can even explain things to them there because I speak the same language and it’ll be easier for them to get along with me. I read and heard about how people in Africa have like all those sicknesses and diseases, etc. and I want to be able to help cure those I can help. I am not only going to stay in Kenya, I want to be able to travel to other places and help them even if there is going to be a language barrier.
I want to apply for your school and nursing program, so I can be an expert in my field of interest and learn to connect with people of different cultures even more than I’ve already have. The training and education by your program will prepare me in assuming in a more challenging position in hospitals or clinics and maybe with other people. I want to study in your program for four years while I have a side job, then graduate, and get me a full time stable job. I like that your program has co-op teaching in it, so I can work while I am learning. I am a motivated and dedicated person, I challenge myself to try new things like learning new languages. I speak Mai Mai (my language), I speak English, I’m learning Spanish and I’m trying to learn Korean. I think I can contribute positively to your school and program, and look forward to this opportunity.
